The young man who found his music
Once upon a time there was a young man who was filled with music. From dawn to dusk, in his ears and mouth, in his mind and heart, he was filled with music.
But every time the young man, overflowing with music, opened his mouth to sing, nothing came out. The people around him looked at him, perplexed. The music? What music? they said. We do not hear any music. It must be in your head.
The music confused the young man until he could not think of anything else, so he decided to go for a walk in the woods. After a while, he rested under the branches of a cedar tree. As his thoughts began to drift, the young man slowly became aware of a new and different sound, coming to him gently through the trees. The young man could not tell exactly what he heard - a long forgotten melody? A heartbeat? To this day, he repeats to anyone who will listen: it was my music.
The young man stood up and leapt through the trees with the agility of a white-tailed deer. Faster and faster he ran, until he reached a clearing in the woods. There, on the banks of a small pond, a glass building crowned with a spiral roof shone. The young man stared at it with delight. There, at last, his music was coming out of all the windows and doors, swirling and sparkling in a dazzling light. He clapped and danced for joy. And when his music came to greet him, the young man reached out his arms, opened his mouth and sang.
It is said that there were never songs like this one. It is said that the young man's song melted Mother Orford's heart of stone and was carried by every river and stream into the deepest parts of the forest, out of reach of men. It is even said that if you go, nowadays, into the woods not far from the slopes of the mountain and lend an ear under the branches of a cedar tree, you will hear the everlasting echo of this young man's song.
As for our hero, legend has it that he returned to his village and often sang for his people, marvelling at the beauty of the song and the story of the young man who found his music.
